Yogyakarta is the cultural heart of Java, and unlike most Indonesian cities it still runs a working royal court. The Kraton, the Sultan's walled palace, sits at the centre of the old town and is open to visitors by day; nearby Taman Sari, the former royal bathing complex, is a maze of pools, tunnels and a sunken mosque that rewards an unhurried hour. From there it's a short walk or a becak ride to Malioboro, the long shopping street that has been the city's commercial spine for generations, and up to the Tugu monument that marks its northern end. Give the city itself a full day before you head out of town — it sets the context for everything the region is famous for, and it's flat, walkable and easy to read on foot.

Yogyakarta's fame rests partly on the two enormous temple complexes within an hour of the city, both inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Borobudur, to the north-west, is a ninth-century Buddhist monument built as a single stepped mountain of stone and carved relief — most people come at first light, when the terraces rise out of the mist. Prambanan, to the east, is the largest Hindu temple compound in Indonesia, a cluster of tall, sharp spires dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma. Both are extraordinary in daylight, and you should build at least one of them into any visit. Prambanan also frames the region's signature evening: the Ramayana Ballet is staged beside the floodlit temples on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday nights, and in the May-to-October dry season it plays outdoors with the spires standing behind the dancers.

Yogyakarta is one of the great craft centres of Java, and watching the work is far better than buying it in a mall. Kotagede, the old quarter that was once the capital of the Mataram kingdom, is the home of Javanese silversmithing; several workshops there run short hands-on sessions where you hammer and file a small piece of your own. Batik is the other pillar — Indonesian batik is recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage — and the village of Giriloyo, near the royal cemeteries at Imogiri south of the city, specialises in the painstaking hand-drawn batik tulis, with classes that let you draw with hot wax on cotton yourself. A morning in a workshop is one of the most rewarding half-days the region offers, and you leave with something you made.
