Yogyakarta is the cultural heart of Java, and unlike most Indonesian cities it still runs a working royal court. The Kraton, the Sultan's walled palace, sits at the centre of the old town and is open to visitors by day; nearby Taman Sari, the former royal bathing complex, is a maze of pools, tunnels and a sunken mosque that rewards an unhurried hour. From there it's a short walk or a becak ride to Malioboro, the long shopping street that has been the city's commercial spine for generations, and up to the Tugu monument that marks its northern end. Give the city itself a full day before you head out of town — it sets the context for everything the region is famous for, and it's flat, walkable and easy to read on foot.
The Gunungkidul district, roughly an hour and a half to the south-east, is where Yogyakarta gets adventurous. Jomblang is a vertical cave you descend by rope and harness with a guided team; around the middle of the day a shaft of sunlight drops through the collapsed roof onto the cavern floor, which is the reason people book it well ahead. Nearby, Pindul offers a gentler alternative — floating through a cave on a tube down an underground stream. Keep going and you reach the south coast's limestone beaches, from the calmer sands of Indrayanti to Timang, where a hand-hauled gondola crosses to a rocky islet above the surf. It's a long day from the city, so it's worth committing a driver or a small-group tour to it rather than improvising.
Yogyakarta is one of the great craft centres of Java, and watching the work is far better than buying it in a mall. Kotagede, the old quarter that was once the capital of the Mataram kingdom, is the home of Javanese silversmithing; several workshops there run short hands-on sessions where you hammer and file a small piece of your own. Batik is the other pillar — Indonesian batik is recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage — and the village of Giriloyo, near the royal cemeteries at Imogiri south of the city, specialises in the painstaking hand-drawn batik tulis, with classes that let you draw with hot wax on cotton yourself. A morning in a workshop is one of the most rewarding half-days the region offers, and you leave with something you made.
Yogyakarta earns its nickname as the city of gudeg, a slow-cooked stew of young jackfruit simmered for hours until it turns sweet and deep brown, served with rice, egg and chicken — the dish to try first. In the evenings, the angkringan carts come out: low street stalls selling small foil-wrapped plates of rice, skewers and, near the Tugu station, kopi joss, coffee served with a lump of glowing charcoal dropped into the glass. For a keepsake, bakpia — small round pastries filled with mung bean paste — are the city's classic edible souvenir. If you'd rather have it all explained and pointed out, a small-group evening food walk is an efficient and sociable way to eat far more widely than you'd manage alone.
Yogyakarta takes its performance traditions seriously, and an evening show is the natural close to a day of temples and craft. The headline is the Ramayana Ballet at Prambanan — more than two hundred dancers and gamelan musicians telling the epic through movement alone, three nights a week. Around the city you can also catch wayang kulit, the shadow-puppet theatre in which a single puppeteer voices dozens of characters behind a lit screen to a live gamelan, and shorter classical dance performances staged for visitors. Whatever you choose, book the fixed-schedule shows around your dates rather than hoping to drop in — the ballet in particular runs only on set nights, and it's the one evening most people plan the rest of the trip around.
